No passport move
NZPA Sydney The Australian Federal Government was not considering any move to require passports for Australians and New Zealanders travelling across the Tasman Sea, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (Mr MacPhee), yesterday. The spokesman said Mr MacPhee would discuss travel documentation with New Zealand and state government officials later
in the year. He would not disclose details of any documentation plans. Mr MacPhee said there was a need for tighter documentation to restrict travel by criminals between the two countries. However, he said the reintroduction of passports was not imminent. The Minister’s spokesman said concern had been expressed about criminals travelling into Australia under false names or using airline tickets made out to false names.
