Part of road to open today

Half 'of New Brighton Road near Lake Terrace Road will' be 1 open to traffic again this afternoon. The road has been closed since last week when a 50metre section of it cracked after last week’s heavy rain.

The cracks were caused by the subsidence of part of the stormwater culvert running from the Horseshoe Lake pumping station to the Avon Riyer.

After inspecting the culvert yesterday morning, the design and planning engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr P. J. Adams) said that the eastern section of the culvert was' sound and it was intended to have a oneway bridge over that section opened this afternoon.

The western section of the culvert would be replaced first and later the eastern section as previously planned as part of the Dudley Creek diversion project. By leaving part of the road open to traffic the complete replacement would take longer than the two months previously suggested, Mr Adams said. “But this way it will be a lot less inconvenient to people than if the complete road remained blocked.” Mr Adams said he could not give an estimate of the cost of the reconstruction but it was allowed for in finance set aside for the Dudley Creek diversion.
