Cool change reduces fire risk

Cooler north-easterly winds yesterday reduced the fire risk in Canterbury forests.

But no rain fell, and the fire danger was still high after 10 days of warm north-westerlies, said the fire control officer of the Forest Service in Canterbury (.Mr R. A. Collier). “The public must still take extreme care in and near forests," Mr Collier said. On Monday, most Canterbury forests rated more than : eight points on the Forest Service's 10-point fire-danger scale.

Yesterday's cooler temperatures brought the fire risk in most forests down to below five points.
