Big entry for road race

More than 200 runners, including two highly-regarded European athletes, are expected to compete in the Heritage Carpets Twilight 10 road race at Taupo on January 5.

The 16km (10 mile) event has been held by the Taupo Harrier Club for the last 15 years, but a sponsor has been found for the 1980 race.

For two Finnish athletes, the race will provide a useful part of tl’eir pre-Olympic build-up, and for other Olympic contenders, it will

be a good time-trial. The Finns, Martti Vaino, the European 10,000 m champion, and Vutikia Toivola, who is aiming at the marathon in Moscow, are confirmed starters. Jack Foster, who has won the event for the last eight years, is expected to compete, but has not at this stage confirmed his entry. Other prominent New Zealand runners will be Fred Smith, the Auckland marathoner, Roger Weatherly (Auckland) and Ray Edwards (Tauranaga).
