No bowls delay expected

; PA Dunedin [ Heavy rain which fell in ; Dunedin on Christmas Day [and saturated all the greens is not expected to delay the start of the New Zealand bowling championships. The championships will be officially opened today and play in the singles championship will begin tomorrow and continue until Sunday. The pairs will then be held from December 31 to January 2 with the final rounds of the singles and pairs being held on the next three days. Qualifying rounds in the fours will be held from January 6 to 9 and post-section plav will begin on January 10. Whereas the grass greens take some time to recover from heavy rain the cotula surfaces recover very quickly. The weed, which grows in the wild around the Otago coastline has been adapted very successfully to bowling greens.

1 Ivan Kostanich (Helens- ; ville), who won the title in 1977. is one of the favourites 1 in the singles, he has proved 1 to be a top player on the : grass greens up north but he has vet to prove that he can handle the cotula as well. Neville Hill (Marewa), the ' top Hawkes Bay player, cannot be discounted because he understands the vagaries of the cotula green. He was brought up in Roxburgh, in Central Otago, and spent several years playing the sport in Dunedin. During that time he was a key member of the Dunedin centre Rothmans team which won the national event. ; Stan Lawson (Papanui) won the title in 1968 and was runner-up to the New Zealand representative, John Malcolm (Carlton), two years ago.

Others who should not be discounted are the New Zealand representatives, John Mears (Blenheim) and Peter Bellis (Aromoho), and the top Pari tutu players, Dave Baldwin and John Murtagh. Outsiders include Terry Scott (North East Valley), and Bruce Ballinger (Paritutu). Top contenders in the pairs are last year’s champions, Vem Muri and Bill Mcarthur, of Paritutu, but they should not be complacent .because they are opposed by another strong Paritutu team of Baldwin arid- Murtagh.
