Try, try try harder
The full tape has Just been released of Keith Quinn's commentary on the spectacular try at Murrayfield that gave the All Blacks vital points to beat Scotland in the final minute. Readers will remember that, from a deep kick by the Scottish half-back, Ben Doon, whose combination with Phil McAvity had dominated the match, Mourie shinned quickly up the goal post to deflect a certain goal, breaking his arm in the process, and fell bleeding to the ground, where he was set upon by Scottish ruffians of a forward nature, clawed and hoofed through nine men, executed a copybook dummy to Williams on the right, rolled gymnastically out of a killing head-tackle while humming “The Starspangled Banner,” jinked and seared through the entire Scots backline, right, right, right again, then cutting in left with a flashing inside swerve that would have made Obolensky look like a flatfooted Clydesdale, then through the full-back and over the cover defence in a flying touchdown that ended with an Immelman turn, a Comaneci roll, and a perfectly-executed Everton fingers at the crowd. The full text is: ‘‘Mourie, Mourie, Mourie. Mourie, Mourie, MOURIE, MOURIE. MOURIE, Mourie, mourie,Mourie, Mourie, Mourie. . . Mourie, Mourie, MOURIE, MOURIE. . .
