National Development Bill

Sir, — i ascertained for the first time on Friday. December 21, by means of an urgent reply-paid telegram to the official secretary of the Governor-General, Sir Keith Holyoake. that the “National Development Bill (was) assented to December 14.” This information you have not, so far, reported. May ■ 1 suggest that, in your next issue, it be reported, or alternatively that you publish this letter? Might I suggest also, whether or not you publish this letter, that you investigate why, with assent occurring so soon after the third reading of the Bill (3 a.m. Thursday December 13). the public are only now being informed about the fact, and about the date, of assent. — Yours/ etc.. HAROLD EVANS. December 24, 1979.

[Mr Evans visited “The Press” on Thursday. December 20, and was told then, after his earlier requests that we investigate, that the bill had been given Vice-Regal assent on December 14. It has not been our practice to report Vice-Regal assent to bills, which once they are passed, is regarded as an automatic conclusion. — Editor.]
