Bushfire crisis eases
'NZPA Sydney The bushfire crisis in the ! Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, eased yesterday, giving weary fire-fighters a wellearned Christmas break. Light rains in the morning and cooler weather dampened some of the worst fire threats. A bush-fire control official said most of the fire-fighting ’ crews were withdrawing from the area but a watch
was still being kept on fires burning north of the Grose Valley Gorge. The biggest fear now was (hat the fire would jump the gorge and then spread almost unhindered towards populated areas stretching from Mount Victoria to Blackheath, Katoomba, and Wentworth Falls. An estimated 800 firefighters worked throughout .Monday, backburning and
clearing fire trails to protec properties likely to be threat ened. The Blue Mountains fires the worst in the slate for 21 years, have been burning fo; nine days and have destroyet about 50,000 hectares of bus! and forest.
