Minister ‘trying to split students’
PA Wellington I The Minister of Education ,(Mr Wellington) has been accused of trying to divide I the membership of the New I Zealand University Students' I Association on racial lines jas political tactics. ( The association’s president (Mr C. J. Gosling), who ! made the allegation, said he (referred to the debate on the (Education Amendment Bill. (1979, (No. 1) in Parliament. 1 The bill requires some (overseas students to pay I $l5OO in tertiary education (fees.
Mr Gosling released i copy of a letter that thi association had sent to M. Wellington criticising hirr for saying in the House tha the association had showi “no interest in the welfan of our own members in thi whole issue.” The letter said that “thi inference that these student: (overseas students) are no our members is at leas gratuitous and probably rac Ist.” Overseas students, as ful members of the association would continue to get it: support. Mr Gosling also releasee Mr Wellington’s reply which said that he fount “its contents quite withou merit or substance.”
