Ariana looks ready to win at Awapuni

Special Correspondent Wellington The top-class Woodville mare, Ariana, will have her fourth run this season in the Summer Cup, first leg of the double at Awapuni this afternoon, and she could easily take out the major share of the stake. I Last time Ariana tried the [W.F.A. 1600 metres of the Manawatu Challenge Stakes she was fifth at the line.; Gold Dust won easily enough. but there was little between Drum, Tang, Shahwon and Ariana which were just about in line across the track.

Before the Stakes, she beat all but Mac’s Gamble in the Huia Handicap at Otaki and was third the start before when resuming over 1400 m on her home track at Woodville. Those runs suggest that she is coming to form quickly and her class will take her a long way toward success. Opposition to Ariana seems certain to come from co-top weight On Show, Vizier and a couple of up-and-comersj Top Grade and Dish.

The well-bred Hawera mare Elegance (Decies-Dor-maranne) could be the leading hope in the Christmas Handicap, the second leg of the double.

For Elegance it will be her third outing this season. She ran on a shade for ninth in the W.F.A. Topsy Stakes at Otaki, ran on as well at seventh in the Evergreen Stakes and was not a bad sprint sixth when resuming at Awapuni.
