Grand Canyon set to win
iNZPA London I New Zealand’s globe-trott--1 ing jumper, Grand Canyon,
makes his second bid to get back in the big money after a year's lay-off when he contests the rich King George VI Steeplechase at Kempton Park today. The nine-year-old had four wins and four course records from as many starts before he broke down late last year. He resumed at Ascot nine days ago, but after leading for much of the race, tired badly in the heavy going land was pulled up before 1 the final fence. Trainer Derek Kent said the start did him good and ( he thinks that if the going I is firm as predicted, his star I charge could be back among I the winners. The “Daily Mail," racing writer, Robin Goodfellow, agreed, but said th* New Zealander’s biggest threat could come from another confirmed front-runner, Tied Cottage. However. Irish challenger. Jack of Trumps, hat th* favouritism at five to two, with sixes and eights offered on Grand Canyon, and Tied Cottage 16 to one.
