Former Canterbury cricket rep. dead
One of New Zealand’s! best known cricketers, Mac: Anderson, has died in Christchurch. He was aged 60. A Canterbury representative from 1938 to 1949, Anderson appeared in one test match, against Australia in 1945-46. He was a Canterbury selector for several years and a member of the New Zealand selection panel for two years. A dashing left-hand batsman, he scored nearly 2000 runs in his 37 first-class matches at an average of 33. For Canterbury he had 32 appearances, scoring 1728 runs at 36.8. His best representative seasons were 1940-41, when he averaged almost 60, and 1948-49. In that summer he made 314 runs at an average; of 52.3 and was distinctly! unlucky not to be a member of the 1949 team in England. Andersen p’ayed for High School Old Keys in senior cricket from 1936-37 to 1963-64, making nearly 6000
runs, including 11 centuries, at an average of 38. He also :took more than 100 wickets [with his right-hand legI breaks. ; After the 1949-50 season he appeared rarely, playing • only seven more senior I games. ; A son. Robert, is a current I New Zealand batsman.
