Fisheries liaison officer
A former Royal New Zealand Navy officer, Mr lan McWhannell (above), has been appointed liaison officer to the Federation of Commercial Fishermen. Based at Nelson, Mr McWhannell, who is 45, was selected from 100 applicants. He was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, and was commissioned in the Royal New Zealand Navy. For the last 17 years he has been associated with the fishing industry. He was one of the first to gain a foreign-going fishing master’s certificate, and in the early days of the Chatham Islands crayfish boom he took fishing boats and convoys to and from the Chathams. Mr McWhannell has also been export manager of two fishing companies.
