General forecast: A depression is moving tout h-eastwards towards ilacQuarie Island and its issociated cold front moving eastwards was expected to tpread rain to Fiordland from last evening and to jther western and southern South Island areas and the Alps today. The front is preceded by strong north-west-erlies over the South Island Ind south of the North Is•nd. Behind the front, cool Ihowery westerlies should
spread on to southern New Zealand today. A ridge of high pressure ' lies over the north of New ’ Zealand; and in most North ' Island areas and the north i and north-east of the South Island, mainly fair weather ’ should continue but with 1 more cloud in western areas from Taranaki south. Centre forecasts: . Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru: mainly fair. Blenheim, Nelson: fair. Greymouth. Hokitika: rain ! developing. I Westport: rain later.
