Toyota, Mazda set records

Japan’s top and thirdtop car manufacturers have announced record production levels. Toyota, Japan’s biggest ( manufacturer, reported an all-time record monthly production of 284,829 units in October, while Toyo Kogyo (Mazda) boosted its output a huge 21.2 per cent in September, compared with September, 1978. The Toyota output was made up of 203,132 passenger cars and 81,697 trucks and buses. The total output was 11.9 per cent up on that of last October.

Toyota’s share of the Japanese car market in the month was 41.1 per cent. The exports, 125,863, were a record for October — Toyota attributes this * to the fact that Toyota’s new 1980 models are in full supply on the American market. Toyo Kogyo is the fastest growing manufacturer in Japan. Mazda exports in September rose a huge 24.1 per cent, with continued heavy demand for the company’s 323 and 626 models around the world. In New Zealand Mazda sales in September were up 44.9 per cent, despite the fact that total New , Zealand sales for all makes were down 3.9 per cent. In the same period, New Zealand’s commercial vehicle market dropped 15.9 per cent on September, 1978, but Mazda commercial registrations were up 22.6 per cent.
