New land speed record
NZPA Rogers Lake, California A film stunt man, Stan Barrett, broke his own world I land speed record when he . reachced 1031 km/h in his rocket vehicle at Rogers ' Lake, California yesterday. Barrett, aged 36, made a ' practice run on this dry lake : bed in preparation for his :
attempt later this week to become the first man to break the sound barrier on land by reaching a speed of about 1206 km/h. Barrett had set the previous record of 1021 km/h in his 48,000-horsepower vehicle in a run across Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, on September 9.
