Star Piper’s luck may improve

Special correspondent Wellington The three-year-old. Star Piper, had little luck in his most recent outing at Woodville and he could gain some compensation when he contests the, Mauriceville Handicap, first leg of today’s Masterton double at Otaki. For Star Piper it will be his first attempt at Class 1 company and he comes into the race on the minimum of 47kg. Out Of The Blue, a talented mare from Hastings, has raced three times this season. She was second last time over 1400 m at Woodville and fourth tile time before that on her home -course. She looks ready now for a bold 1600 m effort.

Varnamo is the class runner in the field. He was eigizth of 16 last time under weight-for-age conditions and today he has but 54.5 kg. The Hawera mare, Tavern Queen, successful first up at Hawera last month, could continue on her winning -way in the Topaz Handicap, the second leg.
