Escaper made his own rope
PA Auckland A Mount Eden prisoner made a six-metre rope out of packing twine and escaped over a well of the jail early last evening. A big police hunt began for Joseph Tia Neho, aged 30, from Auckland, who in February began a three-year sentence for burglary and theft. The prisoner was missed at 7 p.m. but had been seen last half an hour earlier. Some time later the home-made rope was found on the outer wall near the prison gymnasium.
The police said the rope had been made from twine used in the prison workshop for packing. It appeared Neho had been secreting bits of twine for some time.
