Success of police briefing

PA Wellington The Minister of Police (Mr Gill) has said he was grateful that a recent police briefing for Labour members of Parliament had resulted in expressions of confidence in the police by those who attended the briefing. Mr Gill said he had arranged a briefing for National members, of whom 32 attended. “At that time concern was being caused by some arguments and statements bv individual Labour members that demonstrated a lack of confidence in the police,” he said.

“I knew that there were a good number of Labour members who strongly supported the police ana I was anxious that they should all do so. 1 raiseu this matter with Mr Connelly, the Opposition spokesman on police matters, and he readily agreed that a breifing by the police similar to that which had been given to National members was desirable, and a briefing was arranged.” said Mr Gill.

“I will be pleased if this, for some, renewed confidence in the police results in less criticism in the House. For a solid core of Labour Party members their confidence in the police has always been apparent," he said.
