Ship’s tiles ‘unsafe’
PA Auckland An engineers’ dispute with the Union Steam Ship Company about dining-room tiles in the ship Ngakuta at Mount Maunganui was “strictly a matter of safety,” an engineers’ spokesman has said. The Ngakuta was delayed at the port for six days at a cost of $lO,OOO a day. The chairman of the marine section of the Institute of Marine and Power Engin-
eers (Mr A.; Mihaljevich) conceded that the user must pay for extra charges incurred. But the delay was caused by the company taking 11 days to decide that the tiles were dangerous and needed repairing, he said. The tiles had distorted to the extent that they were dangerous to walk on while the ship was at sea. he said. When the company decided that the tiles needed fixing, the job was completed. in six hours.
