Last meeting for registrar

Mr G. G. Turbott, registrar of the University of Canterbury for the last 23 years, yesterday attended his last University Council meeting.

He will retire at the end of the year.

Mr Turbott came to Canterbury from Auckland University College (now Auckland University) where he was assistant registrar from 1951 to 1957. He holds B.A. and B.Comm. degrees from Auckland. After World War II Mr Turbott taught at Takapuna Grammar School. He was also a lecturer in accountancy at Seddon Memorial Technical College evening classes before becoming assistant registrar at Auckland University. 'was to plan the move of the School of Fine Arts to a temporary site at Ham. This was the first step in shifting the university from the town site to Ham.

i As registrar, Mr Turbott has served under seven chancellors and four vicechancellors. He was registrar of the university for longer than any of his predecessors.

1 In the 23 years the student roll and staff of the university have about trebled. The Chancellor of the university (Miss J. M. Herbison) said that Mr Turbott’s years of service were a notable achievement. His concern for the individual had always been apparent. Mr Turbott will be succeeded by Mr W. Hansen, who is the finance registrar.
