Selectors step clown
The New Zealand squash! selection panel will have aI totally different look about it next year as all three incumbents have announced that they will not be seeking re-election. Messrs Viv Hargreaves (convener), Brydon Clarke, and John Haines will all stand down at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Squash Rackets’ Association ( at Taupo on Saturday. "I’ve had a fair go. I’ve been there since 1972,” said Mr Hargreaves yesterday. During the Christchurch man’s eight years as convener of the selectors. New Zealand has contested four: world amateur teams chain-! pionships; the high point j was the 1977 event in Ottawa when the national side,: spearheaded by Bruce!
Brownlee and Murray Lilley (now professionals), were narrowly beaten out of first place by Pakistan after a countback of matches. The world amateur event held in Brisbane last month will be the last of its kind as a meeting there of the International Squash Rackets’ Association decided to abolish the distinction between amateur players and professionals. It is merely a coincidence that the move to open squash comes at the same time as Mr Hargreaves relinquishes his post — a decision made two years ago, he ;savs. Both he and Brydon ! Clarke — both much longer- ! standing on the panel than IMr Haines — were going to (“throw it away after Ca- ■ nada,” but decided to stay lon two more years.
