Floodlight has good chance at Egmont
Special Correspondent New Plymouth Floodlight, a winner at Hawera in mid-October, makes most appeal for the Walker and Sons Handicap, the corresponding event at the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting on the Hawera track today. . The event,' which is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, has attracted an even field and selecting the likely favourite, let alone the winner, looks difficult. Floodlight was fourth in the Waverley Cup before winning on his home track. He then ventured north and finished well back in the Rotorua Cup. He went better at Awapuni on Saturday and if, is expected, he improves
with the run, he will be hard to beat. Garforth, winner of this race last year over Cubacade, is another trained on the track with good prospects. He has not fired in two starts to date this term, but he will be improved by racing and a bold bid from the six-year-old is expected. Man Of Law, a winner at Te Rapa last Saturday, will have a following. He has attracted a lot of interest on occasions and is obviously highly-rated. Shahwon did not fire at Awapuni on Saturday. However, he went boldly at recent trials at Stratford and a better performance in the second leg, the Donovan Handicap, would come as no surprise.
Coober’s Queen looks the problem horse in the field. At her best she would win easily, but after a short break she might need the outing. However, she has gone well fresh previously and it is hard to leave her out. Black Flash and Sereana are Matamata fillies likely to attract support. However, Vogue, a promising mare with Garth Ival at Awapuni makes as much appeal. The top-weights Madame Mink and Sovereign s Knight give trainer B. Deacon a strong hand. The former suffered a minor setback recently but if back to her best would go well. The latter is sure to be improved by racing.
