Sterner line on alcohol abuse

A sterner line on the medical and social problems of alcohol abuse has been adopted by the NewZealand Medical Association. The association, at its October council meeting, called on the Government to recognise the urgent need to control the “huge community problem of alcohol abuse.” It said that it realised prohibition was impractical, but gave its strong support to the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council’s aim to reduce alcohol consumption.

The association believes that more specific undergraduate and post-gradu-teaching programmes on alcoholism are needed, in an endeavour to detect al-cohol-associated problems much earlier than they are at present. A suggestion that a commission of inquiry be established to examine the manufacture, distribution, and consumption of alcohol was rejected, but the association will urge each of its divisions to sponsor public meetings aimed at promoting changed attitudes to alcohol use.
