Store sheep For a smallish yarding of store sheep there was a good, sound inquiry, prices being from steady on late rates to firmer. A fairly large gallery followed the sale but (he quality of the stock in the offering was generally fairly mediocre. The yarding totalled 1373 head compared with 2008 a week ago. It included S 3 lambs, 507 ewes and lambs, 733 hoggets, and 50 ewes and wethers. For about four pens of lambs, sales were made at $14.20 to $15.90. There was a good inquiry for a limited selection of wether hoggets at perhaps slightly better prices. Shorn hoggets brought from about $15.60 to $16.70 and a small lot of brown and black sheep in the wool sold to $24.80. Ewe hoggets continued to sell well up to late rates. They made up to $33.40 for two pens of woolly Romneycross sheep, and Border-cross ewe hoggets with some wool brought $30.40. Otherwise woolly ewe hoggets ranged

i from $24.20 upwards and the I bulk of the ewe hoggets that I were shorn or carrying only I a limited fleece made from i $18.70 to $22.70. i Sales of . hoggets in-1 ! eluded:— Bowron Partnership (Waiau). 110 shorn Corriedale ewe hoggets at $22.70; C. A. Adams (Greendale), 185 woolly Romney cross ewe hoggets at $33.40; K. N. and K. J. Cookson (Hororata). 59 shorn Halfbred ewe hoggets at $22.60. Quite a few ewes and I I lambs were included in the I sale but they were not of jvery notable quality. How-1 ;ever they still sold'well up ito late rates. One rather exceptional sale, . saw some ewe hoggets with i some wool and their lambs! making $18.20 all counted. : The fact that the ewes had a lot of breeding life in front of them added to the value; of this selection. Otherwise, ewes with only I j a little or no wool and lambs' Isold from about $12.10 to, $15.20 all counted, with! woolly ewes and lambs I i bringing from $lO to $13.40. Amongst odd lots yarded l

in the older sheep section, shorn in-lamb ewes brought i $.19. Prime cattie ' Considering the size of the selection — 806 head compared with 479 at the last sale — the sale for prime cattle was a good one. It opened on a slightly hesitant note but subsequently firmed and settled on a good note that was maintained throughout the long sale. Compared with last week, values were probably about on a par. Cows were a strong point, the latest schedule rates being reached and sometimes exceeded. Once again, quality was extremely good. The sale saw another high point reached for steers with a four-year-old Hereford. Friesian-cross steer of great size from A. G. and G. A. Gray (Greenpark) reaching the new record price for the market Of $756 and easily I topping last week's peak of $724. As with a number of recent heavy cattle, the purchaser was Mr A. Verkerk, Christchurch, who said afterwards that he expected the steer to kill out at better than 550 kg. He rated this 'week’s steer as probably the heaviest he has bought this season apart from a Chia-; nina-cross for which he paid $7lB a few weeks ago. I An Angus, Shorthorn,; Hereford-cross steer from F. i Boon made $704. Heifers made to $436 for one from! L. Cockburn (Aylesbury) and; cows were sold at $4lO by; the Wetherall Partnership (Ohoka) and by I. L. and V. McNabb (Cheviot). Heifers and steers up to 220 kg sold from 138 c to 145 c a kilogram, between 220 kg and 270 kg at 134 c to 142 c; and over 270 kg at 131 c to 139 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, $450 to $6OO, with an odd sale to $756. Prime medium steers, $4OO to $450. Prime lighter steers, $340 to $395. Prime heavy heifers, $340 to 8390. Prime medium heifers, $290 to $335. Prime lighter heifers, $262 to $2BB. Prime heavy cows, $340 to $4OO. Prime medium cows, $3OO to $335. Prime lighter cows, from about $270 upwards. Store rattle After the special store cattle sales of the last two weeks, store cattle were sold again as part of the normal weekly market. The entry was a small one at 131, but. there was a continued strong

,inquiry and a very good sale resulted. A few Angus and Anguscross 21-year-old steers fetched up to $376, which was virtually prime market money. The smaller and rather mixed quality yearling cattle also sold very well, steers making from just under $299 to $238 and heifers from about $166 to $228. Sales included:— 1. L. and Y. McNabb (Cheviot) 10 21-year-old Angus and Anguscross steers at $276. Dairy rattle Dairy cattle were again yarded in small numbers, the entry being five head compared with nine last week. The sale attracted a reasonably sized gallery. A 21-year-old Friesian heifer with a Friesian bull calf brought $352 and a secondcalver Friesian cow with a bull calf and another secondcalver Friesian due to a Hereford bull each brought $334. A Friesian heifer was passed in at auction but a Jersey cow due shortly to an unidentified bull sold for $292. Vealers At 13 head or so the veal yarding was one of the smallest for a long ' time. While some of the cattle were of mixed quality, for anything of a better class the market tended to be a shade better. An Angus steer sold for $240 and a Hereford Frie-sian-cross bull made $220. j Some of the heifers in the! selection brought from $197 to $222. Fat pigs 1 Another very large yard- 1
