Aust, clubs seek Cole
NZPA Sydney Four leading Australian soccer clubs are reported to be engaged in a neck-and-neck struggle to sign the New Zealand international mid-fielder, Duncan Cole. Writing in the Sydney “Daily Mirror,” Tom Anderson says four of Australia’s Philips League clubs — Adelaide City, Canberra City, Newcastle KB United, and Marconi — will make final bids to sign the 21-year-old Cole when the New Zealand team returns from its overseas trip this week.
Cole plays for the Auckland club, North Shore, but
Anderson says he is keen to break into Philips League soccer.
He writes that Adelaide City, which already has a former New Zealand international, Glen Dodd, on its books, is leading the race to sign Cole. The Canberra City coach (Mr Victor Fernandez), however, is waiting to fly to Auckland as soon as he hears that Cole is ready to talk. Anderson adds that Canberra is also interested in the New Zealand goal-keep-er, Richard Wilson, of Nelson.
