Gary Maws golf title
Gary Maw is Waitikiri’s new senior golf champion. He has won an absorbing final against Stephen Paterson on the thirtysixth green. The final was of exceptional quality. After 18 holes, Paterson, a talented youngster, had scored 69 — three under the card — but was one down. Maw, although scoring 71, came out best in a thrilling series of holes after the turn. Paterson eagled the tenth, Maw birdied the eleventh and twelfth, Paterson birdied the thirteenth, and the fourteenth was halved in birdies. Both had pars at the testing fifteenth, both narrowly missed birdies at the sixteenth, and Maw had another birdie at
the short seventeenth. The golf in the afternoon was I not of such spectacular quality. Paterson was one up with three to play but had trouble at 16 and 17 just as he did when losing to Malcolm Fry last year. He had a good chance to square : the match at 18 but took three : putts. The victory completed a year of considerable achievement for < Maw. He has had some excep- • tionally good rounds at Waiti- • kiri in the last few months and was unbeaten in the Woodward Cup until the final round. i In the semi-finals. Paterson 11 beat Gavin Salt, 3 and 2, and ] Maw accounted for Paul < Hawkins, 6 and 5. i
