The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Parliament gave the Select Committee on electoral law power to convey its views from time to time to the Minister of Justice when Parliament resumed at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. The Committee on Bills recommended that the Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum Bill, a private bill, should not be allowed to proceed. The reports of the Meai Industry Authority and the New Zealand Shipping Corporation were tabled. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) gave notice that he would introduce the Auckland Electric Power Board Amendment Bill. Mr P. B. East (Nat., Rotorua) gave notice that he would introduce the Roto'-
rua High Schools Board Empowering Bill.
Other members tabled nine notices of motion.
The Hospitals Amendment Bill, Customs Act Amendment (No. 2) Bill, Bank of New Zealand Bill, and Immigration Amendment Bill were introduced. The Commerce Amendment Bill was given a second reading after a division which the Government won by 41 votes to
The Property Speculation Tax Repeal Bill, Estate and Gift Duties Amendment Bill, Castoms Orders Con-
firmation Bill, Pesticides Bill, Toxic Substances Bill, and Restricted Drugs Amendment Bill were passed. The Plant Varieties Amendment Bill was given a second reading and th° Aircrew Industrial Tribunal Amendment Bill second reading was being debated when the House adjourned at midnight.
