Roofing slates stolen
* More than four tonnes of ;rare old roofing slates have 'been stolen from a property jin Ferry Road. : Detectives are puzzled (about the motive for the theft, which occurred some time between Sunday night and yesterday morning. They believe that the slates, valued about $l5OO, would be too easily recognisable to be used on the thief’s house. “However, apparently they are fairly scarce, so there must be some demand for (them,” a police spokesman said. The slates had been stacked behind premises at 1060 Ferry Road. The police believe that the thief or thieves must have used a truck to cary them ■awav. “It would have been ia fairly big job by hand,” the spokesman said.
