Chinkara works well
Special correspondent Hastings
C h i n k a r a highlighted yesterday morning’s Hastings track session when he galloped better than Tang in their 1000 m workout.
All tracks were open with the plough providing firm footing. The course proper and No. 1 grass were easy. Chinkara had the outside running and was shading Tang at the end of 1000 m on the plough in Im in 1.35, the last 800 in 49.3 s and final 600 in 37.55. This was the fastest gallop of the morning and clearly shows the fitness of the two horses. Both are entered for this Saturday’s Wellington meeting with Tang in the Shorts Handicap and Chinkara in the Wainui Handicap. Chinkara won last year’s Wainui and, on his trial yesterday, he must rate a great chance again this year. Drum, one of Chinkara’s main rivals on Saturday, finished his workout with 600 m
on the plough in 37.75. He has thrived since winning over 1200 m at Hastings last month.
Tarbela ended two rounds of pacework on the plough with 600 m in 38.55. He just failed to see out the 2300 m ■ at Masterton last Saturday and has 100 m less to go at ■ Trentham.
The speedy Current Coin showed his usual dash in running 800 m in 49.55, the ' last 600 in 36.95. He finished ' with plenty in reserve and is . sure to be a top chance in Saturday’s Shorts Handicap. Warshash and Red Agent hit out well over 600 m on ' the No. 1 grass in 37.55, , Warsash was scratched from Saturday’s Masterton meet* ' ing because the track waj soft. He should show un well at Trentham if th« track is firm.
Clive Comet, preparing foi the Wainui Handicap, ran two 600 m sprints on th< plough. He was not at full pace in either of them and recorded 40.6 s and 38s.
