Expensive fishing
Sir,—Mr D. L. Barry (October 8) complains of too severe a string of penalties for his friend’s few minutes of unlicensed fishing. He does not deny an offence but 1 share the ire caused when various officers realise they have you, technically at least, in the wrong, and then appear to relish the opportunity to book instead of rebuke. True, some will disregard warnings, but surely most of us appreciate and respect some simple humanity? It saddens me to wonder what percentage of our workforce is involved in the setting of traps for the temporarily errant or ramming the book down the unwilling throats of the not really guilty. Where repentance is clear officials should warn, educate, and forgive. It is a great way to make a friend and to induce the errant party into becoming his own more careful policeman. — Yours, etc.,
