Street’s bid just fails

Mark Street’s bid to comIplete a hat-trick in the I Canterbury under-21 golf (championship failed at Hareiwood yesterday. I Street, in his last year in [the event, finished three [strokes behind Brent Pater[son who, ironically, had [been the same number of shots behind Street the previous year in the runner-up position. The players had their first round on the old course and (covered the new course in I the afternoon. The 18-year-old Paterson shot a twounder par 71 to lead Streets by one shot after the first 18 holes. The Harewood junior, Neil: Reid, had an even par 73 and Stephen Paterson, of Waitikiri. was in close con- s tention on 74. However, Paterson, who | might well have shared the [ title with Street last year until a disastrous penulti-i mate hole, made no such mistake on this occasion.. I His approach shots were' consistently attacking and accurate, and, although a few short putts missed, his second 71 was sufficient for him to win by three shots. Paterson had a few putting lapses, but they were not as frequent as those by Street. The Canterbury Freyberg representative and Harewood No. 1 was equally aggressive and accurate with his approach shots, but he vvas most unhappy about his inability to hole any putt that mattered.

-I The final blow to Street s defiances came on the thirtyf (fifth. He badly needed a -[birdie to stay with Paterson [and had a grand opportunity t (after his fine second shot Twas pin high and 3m from - the hole. i[ His attempt just rolled fipast. Street then learned an--1 other golf lesson: that the > [hole is not finished until the ball is in the cup. A casual : one-handed tap-in missed 1 and he had a one-over 5. ti Reid, with a 74, had his (best placing in the event, land Stephen Paterson, also I with a consistent second round of 74, was one stroke [behind in fourth place. I Two six-handicap players. Grant Percy and Stephen [Barry, were expected to ’dominate the under-17 championship, and they did just [that. ; They both had 75s on the old course but had more difficulty on the new course; ■ I Barry did slightly the better with 79, compared with [Percy’s 80. Leading scorers were:— Under 21 142—8. G. Paterson 71. 71. 145—M. E. Street 72. 73. 147— N. S. Reid 73. 74. 148— S. J. Paterson 74, 74. 152 B K. St reel 76. 76. 154— P. McDonald 77, 77; J.
