Prominent trotting official dead
Mr Stanley Andrews, al prominent official of the? Canterbury Park Trotting! Club, died in Christchurch ■ i yesterday aged 66. Mr Andrews was elected a! steward of the club in 1958' and was promoted to then committee five years later. 1 i He was president from 1973 until 1976 and was a life? member of the club. He took a particular interest in the work of the pro-'' gramme committee and did much to help promote fea--' ture races. He served as a director of j? Addington Raceway fori, more than 12 months before? his death. Mr Andrews raced several L horses in partnership with I friends, two of the best ini, which he had an interest? being Royal Brittania and. Bazax. L Mr Andrews was a promi-1 nent hockey player andi: cricketer in the i93os. A? strong and robust full-back, i he played hockey for;: Canterbury and was a mem-?
;ber of a New Zealand touring team in Australia. 2 i His cricket club was Riccarton. He played in the (senior team from 1933 to 1938, and came back for an outstandingly successful seaison in 1941-42. when he I took 60 wickets at nominal! cost, with his best figures I : ; seven for 37 against St I j Albans. In all. he took 160 wickets in senior cricket at ! 18.2 runs each. He played once for . Canterbury in 1933-34, and made three more appearances in 1934-35, one in the [following summer. In 193435, he had match figures of five for 84 against Auckland 1 (and then took one for 21 [and six for 59 against Wellington. That season he rep- - resented the South Island, taking four for 53 in North’s | first innings. He was a [Strong, lively seam bowler. ; Golf was another keen interest.
