More mariner members
Membership of the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners continues to grow.
A few years ago the membership comprising sea-going and land-based members, including honorary members, totalled 283. Today there are 349 members, with branches at Auckland (132 members), Wellington (115). Tauranga (49) and Christchurch (53). The present master of the company is Captain G. G. Mooney, of Wellington. The deputy-master is Captain A. R. Bedwell, of Auckland. Each branch has a warden — in Christchurch, Captain J. B. Graham, commercial manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Sea-going members are in the minority at present. Master mariners have branched out into many new' careers, ranging from farming to commerce. The New Zealand Company of Master Mariners was formed in 1925 after the visit of 150 ships of the United States fleet. This was a good-will visit and so heavy was the demand on pilotage at Auckland. Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, that local shipmasters had to be called to help. This brought many master mariners together and it
was decided then to form the company. After the Second World War it was revived. Today the New Zealand company has friendly liaison with the Company of Master Mariners in Britain and w'ith its counterparts in Australia and South Africa.
