An ancient craft
For those interested in traditional or unusual •crafts, 'The Art of Taan--sko Weaving,” by S. M. Mead, provides an insight 'into this ancient Maori art as well as giving detailed and explicit instructions for its construction. The taaniko technique is a specialised form of weaving which ornaments Maori costumes and artefacts. The art was a medium of creative expression for both men and women. Its only require-
ments are native flax and natural dyes or a modern substitute, thread, and some dexterity. The instructions in “The Art of Taaniko Weaving” include patterns for samplers, belts and ornaments and many diagrams show step-by-step methods. With interest growing in the traditional crafts and culture of the Maori people this book will prove interesting and informative to a wide range of people.
