New list of noxious plants drawn up

PA Wellington The latest list of plants considered noxious throughout New Zealand came into effect on October I. All the plants are in class B. for control. It is the first listing of New Zealand-wide species by the restructured Noxious Plants Council, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The secretary of the council (Miss' Raeburn Hirsch) said that under previous legislation noxious-plant control had been a rural responsibility. The Noxious Plants Act, which came into effect in

April, 1979, removed this anomaly so that cities and boroughs were now just as involved as rural counties. The class B list is: Australian sedge, barberry, blackberry, boxthorn, broom, cape tulip, coltsfoot, Darwin’s barberry, gorse, hemlock, nasella tussock, nodding thistle, ragwort, sweet brier, water hyacinth. Miss Hirsch said the council would meet next month to consider other plants for class-B listing. Some plants now in class B might be classified as class A, for total eradication, after further studies.
