Late sport Old Boys win Club squash
High School Old Boys II has won the Wilson Shield for the men’s division one inter-club squash competition by a narrow two-point margin from Burnside H* In the final round last evening the Old Boys team overhauled Burnside H (which had a bvei thanks to an 8-2 win over Lui[versify I. j Old Boys knew it could afford to drop a match and still win the title but was nevertheless rocked a little when the No. 4. Malcolm Thompson, struck Pau) Davenport (University I) in the first contest and was well beaten in tour games. And then John French, obviously feeling the pressure, had several anxious moments against Malcolm Forster before winning l 3-1. French dropped the third, game and then, after some] mighty rallies. Forster levelled at 8-8 in the fourth after trailing 3-8. There was little doubt about the dominance of the Old Bo\s No. 2, Viv Hargreaves, in his game with Malcolm Lawrence, but the top player. Lawrence Skurr. had unexpected difficulties against Matthew Clements before finally prevailing in four and ensuring the competition win for Old Boys. Third place in the Wilson Shield has gone to the other Old Boys team which finished with a convincing win over Christchurch 1. The only Christchurch win was the result of a worthy effort by Mark Woodhead who just edged out Mike Stossel, in five. Burnside I managed to achieve a whitewash victory over Suburbs though the latter’s Murray Carson had a distinct points advantage over his well-regarded opponent, Graham Foulds. Car son won the first two games very easily indeed and even alter dropping the next two still had a match ball at 8-6 in the fifth. Max Morrison, at No. 1 for Suburbs. also extended his opponent, Neil Rush. University H’s top two players, Barrie Matthews and Hamish Dowell, had their usual victories in the contest against Sumner and the undoubted highlight here was the very tight tussle between the number threes, Alan Corkin (University) and Ryan McCutcheon.
Corkin hit some thundering forehand cross-courts and nick shots on occasions but McCutcheon was in great form and went to a 7-2 lead in the filth.
