Murchison ’quake
On June 17, 1929, a devastating earthquake struck Murchison, which was close to the epicentre.
"Murchison 1929” is a repeat broadcast of the “Spectrum" programme
presented earlier this year to commemorate the occasion.
The loss of life at Murchison — 17 people — was low only because the district was only sparsely
settled but the main shake was only the beginning of a period of terror for the local people. After-shocks continued. There was fear that earthquake debris damming , rivers would give way, I causing heavy flooding.
