This story is of special interest in this, the week when Universal Children’s Day is observed in New' Zeeland. It was written by Kirsty McMenamin to tell other young readers how she became interested in the United Nations Children’s Fund (U.N.1.C.E.F.) and how her enthusiasm led to the starting of a junior U.N.I.C.E.F. group at her school. She writes: My mother is a member of the Christchurch regional committee of the United Nations Children’s Fund (U.N.1.C.E.F.). and on Sunday March 25 she was providing transport for two U.N.I.C.E.F. delegates who were visiting Christchurch. They were Mr S. Bacic and Mr S. Uniemoto from the United States of America. These two men were very nice

and they explained to me about what U.N.I.C.E.F. does for the children of the world. We also met some children who have a junior U.N.I.C.E.F. club that helps with fund-rais-ing.

I decided it would be worth while if I could start a U.N.I.C.E.F. club at my school, especially as this is the International Year of the Child. The headmaster of my school. Wairakei, agreed, and during, assembly he showed two U.N.I.C.E.F. films to all the children.

A club of eight children was formed in May, and we had a meeting at my house.

We decided we would do something for Telethon and held a biscuit bar at the school. Our mothers

made biscuits and small cakes, and we sold them to the children at school. We made $32. After that we had a raffle at the opening of the U.N.I.C.E.F. greetings card campaign, and we were able to give $21.40 to the fund. Four of us went into town to this function and we assisted in a collection for the “Music for U.N.1.C.E.F.” that was provided by the Casebrook Junior U.N.I.C.E.F. club. On Universal Children’s Day in October my mother is giving an afternoon tea at my home for the Wairakei Junior U.N.I.C.E.F. club. Throughout the world this day is set aside for people to do something special for children.
