Car plunges off wharf: couple die
A middle-aged couple were killed yesterday afternoon when their car plunged off a wharf into the sea at Lyttelton. The police said that they would not release the names of the man and woman until noon today as their nearest relatives were in the North Island. The couple were from Christchurch, and aged in their late forties or early fifties.
The accident happened about 4.30 p.m., when the driver of the car attempted a U-turn on the No. 7 wharf. It is thought the late-model car may have skidded on the wet surface of the wharf before it plunged into the sea. A Lyttelton Harbour Board tug was on the scene quickly, but the couple had drowned before a diver could get to them.
