Lone survivor tells tale
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg A survivor from a shipping disaster who spent three weeks drifting in a liferaft in the Indian Ocean has told how he watched helplessly as his crewmates drowned in mountainous seas. Kim McPherson, aged 25. a South African-born naturalised Australian, was chief officer of the 1776-tonne Durban coaster Induna. which disappeared during a voyage to Mauritius.
The Greek ship Constantia, which picked him up south of Madagascar on Saturday, is now heading for Mauritius. Mr McPherson was found lying unconscious in the bottom of the liferaft, alongside the body of a shipmate. Mr McPherson has told the Induna’s owner by radio telephone that the 18-strong crew abandoned ship w'hen it sprang a leak, and the
- lifeboats capsized in heavy > seas. With Second Officer Oxley r Oxland, he clambered aboard t a liferaft, and they were ; blown away from shipmates , clinging to the debris. i The South African Navy, which made a wide search 1 earlier this month for survi--1 vors, is unlikely to send out , its search aircraft again as ’ Mr McPherson has said he 1 is sure there are no other ; survivors.
