Fire guts tour bus
NZPA-Reuter London Fire gutted a coach carrying South Africa’s Barbarians rugby squad yesterday shortly after they arrived to start a controversial eight match tour. Eye witnesses said that the blaze broke out near Chippenham, west of London as the coach drive along a motorway to southwest England where the side plays its first match tomorrow.
Witnesses said that all 24 players rnd officials escaped from the coach without injury. There was no immediate indication as to what had caused the blaze.
Anti-apartheid campaigners have promised to disrupt the tour.
A radio reporter at the scene said: “The coach is a burnt-out wreck. Players are standing around looking very bemused. The baggage is strewn all over the road.”
