Long cricket career conies to an end
The 24-year senior career 1 of the Sydenham cricket all- I rounder, Dave Gallop, is at an end. Captain of the senior side ! last summer, Gallop has decided to play afternoon ] cricket only. 1 A cheerful bowler of leg- j breaks and a hard-hitting ( batsman, Gallop had a great ’ record for his club and for 1 Canterbury. Only a dozen 1 bowlers in the history of 1 grade cricket exceeded his t tally of 532 wickets and in his 235 senior matches he r made 6861 runs. In addition j he took 139 catches, which ( puts him fourth-equal in then club records. 1 Gallop plaj’ed for Canter-! < bury in 25 matches betweenb 1956-57 and 1965-66, scoring! < 803 runs at 20.6 and taking (< 27 wickets at 35.6. He is best remembered asjj a Canterbury player, for the'i courageous century he if scored against Auckland in 1 his last season. Chasing an;t Auckland score of 321,11
Canterbury lost five top batsmen for 23. But the Sydenham club-mates. Gallop and Keith Thomson, scored 120 together. . Gallop was last out, for 124, and by then Canterbury had reached 287. Then the pace attack of Dick Motz, Gary Bartlett and Bruce Taylor had Auckland out for 129. and Canterbury’ scored the last of the 164 runs needed from the last ball of the match. j In the final over, three runs were needed from the last three bails, and Bob Cunis tried to prevent them being made by bowling bouncers. But "from each delivery a bye was run. It! ranks among the most ex-1 citing finishes in a century! of cricket at Lancaster Park. I Gallop was a very good,! and assertive cricketer,! firm in his views, and in the! expression of them. He! leaves behind an excellent] record, and many happy] memories.
