Obstetrics charge
Sir, — Surely the basic principle behind New Zealand’s free maternity treatment is to ensure high-qual-ity medical care for all. with healthy babies to benefit all New Zealand. Mr Gair’s proposed part-charges (September 29) to cover increased costs will mean the difference between all receiving equitable medical treatment. Even if the fee is kept as low as SI this could be the deterrent to those in lower socio-economic groups from regular obstetric care, and could lead to more postnatal problems later, ultimately costing New Zealand more. Class distinction is rearing its head again, as the higher income group can afford to pay specialist fees if so desired anyway. — Yours, etc.,
V. J. UPTON. September 29, 1979.
