Coals to Newcastle?
NZPA Canberra One item in the latest New Zealand Australia Free Trade Agreement might be difficult for even the most enterprising to take advantage of. Seawater, says the latest list from the Department of Trade and Resources, can be traded between the two countries duty free. Although seawater has always been on the dutyfree list, according to the department in Canberra, it was included just to make sure it stayed duty free. Nobody was able to say’
why seawater was included, but it was confirmed that there haji never been any trade in it and that the future demand was not likely to be great. It was suggested thstt seawater could be used in industry for making salt liquors, but again the department could not confirm whether Austral iap industry would prefer New Zealand seawater or vide versa. “We are just covering the options,” one trade spokesman said.
