Japanese plans uncertain

PA Wellington Government sources in Wellington last evening could not confirm that the Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Massayoshi Ohira) planned to visit New Zealand early next year.

A deputy secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affars (Mr 1. L. G. Stewart) said he was aware of reports suggesting such a visit but could not confirm it. He said the possibility of a visit by Mr Ohira had been talked about but that it was a long way from being a firm arrangement. Earlier, Japanese Government sources in Tokyo sa-id Mr Ohira planned to visit New Zealand and Australia for about a week in January next year. The sources said Mr Ohira wanted to make the trip to strengthen further the friendly relations between Japan and Australia and New Zealand.
