Railway strife may be averted
Worsening industrial strife between the Locomotive Engineers’ Association and the Railways about the future of the overnight passenger train between Christchurch and Dunedin appears to have been averted. Late last week the Christchurch branch of the association met Railways representatives and the parties agreed to hold a conference to discuss the future of passenger ser-
vices between South Island main centres. The association’s national executive and senior Railways officers will probably met in Wellington early this week, according to the secretary of the Christchurch branch (Mr R. Cheyne). Because the Railways had agreed to the conference the ban on expressfreight loading imposed by the Christchurch branch last Monday had been lifted, he said.
