T. Smith’s fifth Epsom
NZPA Sydney Tommy Smith won his fifth Epsom Handicap when Imposing scored by a length and a half to win the $100,500 event at Randwick on Saturday. Imposing won from the pacemaker, Steel Blade, with Never Despair a long neck away, third. The favourite, Scomeld, was midfield and her trainer Bart Cummings had no excuses for her bad run. Smith’s other Epsom winners were Speed or Sound in 1968, Gunsynd in 1972, Lord Nelson in .1974 and Authentic Heir in 1975.
Imposing will now be set for the $175,000 W. S. Cox Plate (weight-for-age) over 2050 m at Moonee Valley on October 27. The four-year-old is not in the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup. The jockey, Malcolm Johnston, said he had no worries on Imposing who was never further back than fifth. Johnston pushed Imposing past the pacemaker, Steel Blade, in the straight for a comfortable win. Imposing has now won three races in a row.
The four-year-old Sonstone was fourth and Stormy Rex was fifth.
Stormy Rex enhanced his chances in the $100,500 Metropolitan Handicap over 2600 m at Randwick today with an impressive run. He was well back for most of the race and came from seventeenth at the tum for a good fifth. He will appreciate the extra distance in the Metropolitan.
