Jones leads qualifiers
NZPA-Reuter Montreal I Alan Jones, of Australia,! earned the pole position on the starting grid for the < Anadian Grand Prix formula one race with the fastest qualifying time a’ He Notre Dame track at Montreal. Jones, who has won three of the last four grand prix events and ranks fourth in the world championship, drove his Saudia - Williams FWO7 around the 4.41 kilometre circuit in 1 min 29.892 sec. -

Frank Williams, designer of the cars driven by Jones and Regazzoni, departed somewhat from his usual laconic posture to express satisfaction over the qualifying results. Villeneuve’s Ferrari teammate, South African Jody Scheckter. who clinched the world driving championship with 51 points earlier last month at Monza, dropped to a disappointing ninth in the !trials.
