West Coast floods expected
Flood warnings for most of the west coast of the South Island were issued late last evening. The weather office at Christchurch Airport told the police that between 50mm and 100 mm (2in to 4in) of rain could be expected during the night in inland Fiordland, Westland. and Buller. Police stations on the West Coast were alerted, and radio warnings broadcast.
A weather office spokesman said that unusually heavy rain was expected to accompany a warm, moist, north-westerly front which was flowing on to the West Coast.
